The Case of the Lamp That Went Out eBook Auguste Groner Grace Isabel Colbron
This is the first novel I've read by Auguste Groner, and I was happily surprised.Groner was a turn of the century (19/20th) Austrian writer who produced several novels featuring the detective Joseph Muller. In "The Case of the Lamp that Went Out," a man is discovered shot dead by the roadside in a quiet suburb of Vienna. Muller is involved early on and his methodical efforts lead to the solution of the murder. Groner was a socially-minded former teacher, and what makes her detective appealingly different is his humanity. Muller, like Sherlock Holmes, is a brilliant observer and thinker, but whereas Holmes tends to treat the people involved in his cases objectively--as he would other elements pertaining to the solution of the mystery, Muller shows empathy and an understanding of the complexities of human character. He has been compared in that regard to Chesterton's Father Brown.
This approach is evident in "The Case of the Lamp that Went Out." Its outcome is more complex than the murderer-caught-and-justice-served resolution one usually expects of the genre. The writing is clean and (unlike some novels of the period) the plot is focused and uncluttered by tangent observations--surprisingly so since Groner is also writing to make a point on the need for a sympathetic understanding of the complexities of human nature even in the pursuit of criminal justice. Yet she avoids unnecessary preachiness, letting the tale make the point.
It's a short novel and quickly read. Note: Before the first chapter there's a rather lengthy description of Joseph Muller. It's unnecessary and not typical of the rest of the novel, and for all I know it may be a preface added by the translator.
A remark about the rendering of the Kindle edition: the lines have hard returns. I had to read with my Kindle sideways to avoid weird line breaks,

The Case of the Lamp That Went Out eBook Auguste Groner Grace Isabel Colbron Reviews
I didn't care for this as much as I thought I would. The mystery was somewhat simplistic, but since I'm a dunce who never sees a twist coming, that wasn't my issue. What got me was the repeated praise within the narrative. Over and over, we hear what a clever, modest detective this guy is. A little more tell than show. It got to be a touch too cheesy for me.
I thought this was a great little read. Found the characters intriquing and nicely intertwined in a good ole fashion who-done-it story line. I am certainly going to look for more stories about this unique detective. Definitely a Sherlock Holmes sort of character without the smugness. Only reason I gave it four stars was to do with the way some of the formatting was done. Nothing wrong with the story or how well it is written. Was more than worth the little I paid for it. Would recommend it for sure.
Some solid editing would have improved this book immensely (or perhaps a better translation?). I've read other mysteries from this time period and know that not, by a long shot, are all stories so long and drawn out. On the up side, it did lull me to sleep (I was reading it on my in bed). Also, the plotting was not bad but the writing itself made this tedious to read.
I gave this mystery a 5 star rating because it was great and I loved it. I loved the title and I loved the mystery which was not as easy to figure out as it seems to be at first. The characters were very well written and really had your empathy when you moved along in the story with them as you realized what they were faced with. The detective was wonderful too and is a lot more easy going with his boss than I would be if I had a boss that got mad at me when I was right. Although this mystery is an older style mystery I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good mystery.
Muller is reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes in the way he searches for clues. But he is very plain and quiet in his habits. He is a policeman with a tender heart.
This book is about a detective named Joseph Muller, I liked his charactor.
This was an interesting book, it kept your attenion and did not have a lot of gruesome details and was fast past and I liked his manner with subjects, he got the job done without a lot of mush or horror. I will read more of her books. I rated this a 8 and I rate all my books from 1-10. If they are not at least a 5 I do not read anymore by that author.
Detective Joseph Muller of Vienna, Austria is brought into a case where a man is found murdered in a vacant lot. The police are able to discover the identity of the murdered man, and due to Muller's ability as a detective he is able to follow the very obscure clues to find the truth. It is a case of deductive reasoning to sort through all of the evidence to determine who is guilty. I enjoy Groner's books about Joseph Muller and recommend this one for all who also enjoy books from the late nineteenth century.
